The messenger in the name
Latin nuntius: the messenger. Not the message, not the road, not the seal – the person who carried it. A nuntius set out, arrived, and answered for what they brought. The word is still in circulation: to announce is to play the nuntius, and a papal nuncio is an envoy who speaks for someone else and stays answerable to them.
The same word did double duty in Rome. Nuntius also meant the news itself, the report that arrived. Messenger and message shared a name because for most of history you could not have one without the other. Somebody had to bring it, and who that somebody was formed part of what you were being told.
In 1610 Galileo published the first observations of the night sky made through a telescope, under the title Sidereus Nuncius – the starry messenger. A new instrument had extended the reach of an unaided eye, and the report it made possible needed a name. The instrument did not observe on anyone's behalf. A person looked, wrote down what was there, and signed it.
The x
The ending changes because the instrument changed again. Software now does the carrying. It reads more sources in an hour than a person reads in a week, holds them beside each other, and finds both where they agree and where they quietly contradict one another.
What it cannot do is mean it. A model has no stake in being wrong. So the work is split: the machine reads and drafts, and a person decides whether the draft is true enough to publish and answers for it when it was not. That second half is the older half of the word, and it is the half that was not automated.
How an article gets here
Sources. Every story begins as items collected from the feeds of named publications. Nothing is republished. Source texts are internal working material and never appear on this site – no public code path is even able to read them.
Clustering. Items covering the same event are grouped by meaning rather than by keyword, and syndicated copies of one original are collapsed back into the single origin they came from. A cluster waits before drafting starts, so coverage that arrives late still counts.
Two origins, minimum. Drafting begins only once a cluster holds at least two genuinely independent origins. One outlet's exclusive is one outlet's claim; it is held for scrutiny rather than written up.
Drafting. A language model writes an English and a German version from the whole cluster at once. Synthesis, not a rewrite of whichever item read best.
The gate. Three checks must pass before an editor can approve anything. The draft is measured against each individual source, so that it cannot be one source in new words. Every factual claim is mapped to the source it came from. The AI disclosure is set. Approval stays locked until all three pass, enforced in the API and in database constraints rather than only in the interface.
A person. An editor reads the draft beside its sources and approves it, sends it back, or rejects it. There is no path that publishes anything automatically.
Every published article names and links the outlets it was built from, carries the disclosure above the text, and says so when it has been updated.
What this is not
It is not an aggregator: nothing here is a stream of other people's headlines. It is not a rewrite service: a draft that turns out to be a single source in new words fails the first check and never reaches an editor. And it is not automation with a human rubber stamp – the approval is the work, not the paperwork around it.
